Phylogeny. Prior to the seventh version of this site asterids were part of a major polytomy that included rosids, Berberidopsidales, Santalales, and Caryophyllales, but then the order of branching below the asterids seemed to be stabilizing, perhaps with a clade [Berberidopsidales [Santalales [Caryophyllales + Asterids]]] while rosid relationships seemed to be [Saxifragales [Vitales + Rosids]]]. However, recent work suggests a polytomy is indeed probably the best way to visualize relationships around here at present. So for further discussion of relationships at the base of asterids and rosids, see the Pentapetalae node.

Age. This node may be about 109.9 Ma (Magallón et al. 2015) or ca 109.3 Ma (Tank et al. 2015: Table S1, S2).
Chemistry, Morphology, etc.. The position of the character of ovule number on the tree is unclear. However, taxa with one or two usually apical ovules/carpel are common in the rosid II clade.
Phylogeny. See the Saxifragales pages for further discussion on the relationships of the malvids in general and of Picramniales in particular. Da Silva et al. (2021) suggested that the nortriterpenes with limonid-like skeletons and perhaps also quassinoids might link Picraminaceae - Picramnia in particular - to Rutaceae-Cneoroideae; Picramniaceae might be sister to [Rutaceae, Simaroubaceae, Meliaceae].
PICRAMNIALES Doweld - Main Tree.
Just the one family, 4 genera, 50 species.
Includes Picramniaceae.
Note: In all node characterizations, boldface denotes a possible apomorphy, (....) denotes a feature the exact status of which in the clade is uncertain, [....] includes explanatory material; other text lists features found pretty much throughout the clade. Note that the precise node to which many characters, particularly the more cryptic ones, should be assigned is unclear. This is partly because homoplasy is very common, in addition, basic information for all too many characters is very incomplete, frequently coming from taxa well embedded in the clade of interest and so making the position of any putative apomorphy uncertain. Then there are the not-so-trivial issues of how character states are delimited and ancestral states are reconstructed (see above).

1/2. Peru, Manu National Park, adjacent Brazil, also Colombia, Choco. Map: above, green, see also Londoño-Echeverri and Trujillo-López (2023).
Evolution: Divergence & Distribution. Magallón and Castillo (2009: relaxed and constrained penalized likelihood datings) estimated ages of ca 107.9 and 108.4 Ma for this clade, although it was placed as part of a basal polytomy in the malvids.
The family is very poorly known, particularly the recently described Nothotalisia and Aenigmanu (W. W. Thomas 2011; Thomas et al. 2021; Londoño-Echeverri & Trujillo-López 2023) which both have an androgynophore in the staminate flowers.
Chemistry, Morphology, etc.. The bitter taste in the bark is probably caused by the presence of sugar-linked anthracenone derivatives (Jacobs 2003). Indeed, Jacobs (2003) emphasizes the distinctive nature of such secondary metabolites, these anthracenone moieties linked to C5-sugar derivatives apparently being unknown in any other plants, and the C18 acetylenic acid, tariric acid, is also unknown from other flowering plants.
Xylem parenchyma is rather scanty to absent. Fibre tracheids dominate, but Alvaradoideae commonly have vascular tracheids (Webber 1936). Picramnia may have unilacunar nodes with three or more traces; the hairs are unicellular and have distinctive golden contents (M. Ogburn, pers. comm.).
W. W. Thomas (2004, 2011) noted that the stamens were opposite the petals. The position of the staminodes of the carpelate flowers of Alvaradoa should be confirmed.
Early literature is usually under Simaroubaceae. For additional general information, see Fernando and Quinn (1995) and Kubitzki (2006b), for chemistry, see Hegnauer (1973, 1990), Stuhlfauth et al. (1985: fatty acids), Bohlmann et al. (1973: acetylenes), Villatoro et al. (1974: Alvaradoa) and Da Silva et al. (2021), and for vegetative anatomy, see Jadin (1901). There is some information on pollen in Moncada and Machado (1987), but it should be confirmed and extended to the whole family, Rao (1970) briefly mentions the seed coat of Alvaradoa and Fernando and Quinn (1992) fruit anatomy. Additional data are taken from seeds of Alvaradoa (Núñez et al. 83), Picramnia sellowiana (Vásquez & Jaramillo 11419) and P. latifolia (Aguilar 5020).
Phylogeny. Relationships are [Alvaradoa [Picramnia [Nothotalisia + Aenigmanu]]] (W. W. Thomas et al. 2021: ITS, rbcL), although Shipunov et al. (2020: ITS, rbcL, trnL-F) found them to be [Picramnia [Nothotalisia + Alvaradoa]]. Shipunov et al. (2020) sampled extensively within Picramnia although, as they mentioned, support for the relationships they obtained was not always strong; they recovered the basal relationships [P. ciliata [P. pentapetala + the rest]], but those two species were definitely non-basal in Thomas et al. (2021).
Classification. Prior to version 10 of this site I had two subfamilies for the (then) two genera in Picramniaceae; although there are now four genera in the family, a suprageneric classification seems altogether too much.
Previous Relationships. Picramniaceae have usually been placed within Simaroubaceae (e.g. Cronquist 1981; Takhtajan 1997: the two genera then known were each in separate subfamilies) with which they agree in their bitter bark, compound leaves and small flowers. The enigmatic Gumillea might seem to go somewhere around here, but it differs in its alternipetalous stamens, seed number, and so on.
Botanaical Trivia. Aenigmanu was described ca 48 years after it was first discovered; it was only with the use of molecular markers that it could be identified to family - stipules, simple leaves, leaf-opposed inflorescences, etc., do not immediately bring Picramniales to mind.
