Feather Grass
Poaceae (Gramineae)

A large genus of 150-300 species depending on classification. In the FSU about 65 species in steppes and semideserts.

S. pulcherrima C. Koch

Caucasus, Central Asia, Middle East and Europe. In steppe, dry slopes in mountains up to subalpine zone.

Tufted grass 70-150 cm. Leaf blades elongated, involute. Panicle 35-55 cm. V - early spring to late autumn (some leaves overwinter). Fl - mid spring to late summer. Fr - mid autumn. P - by seed and division. Prefers sunny places. Good for solitary and group planting and as a cut plant. Close to Stipa pennata L., but much taller and all parts are larger. Z 5. New.
