A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Argilla,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. argilla: clay, i.e. a moist, sticky earth, a mud, a fine-grained earth that is plastic when hydrated and hardens in the air, but especially when heated, used, e.g. in making pottery, bricks &c. Clay is a sedimentary earth, ‘limus,-i (s.m.II), abl.sg. limo,’ q.v., is similar but seems to be a sediment mixed with organic material, a mud(WIII) [> L. argilla,-ae (s.f.I) “potter’s clay” (Glare).

- [De Insitione; on grafting] mox argilla aut limo circumda, & linteolo investi aut cannabino vinculo obliga fortiter (Ray), soon afterwards encircle it with clay or mud, and dress it with a strip of linen, or firmly bind with a rope made of hemp.
