A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Caespitulus,-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. caespitulo: a little tuft, a small sod, small cluster; 'employed of Hymenomycetes for a Fungus tuft (Jackson) [> L. dim. caespes,-itis (s.m.III), q.v., a small tuft or sod, a small clump];

- [Puccinia; fungi] in caespitulis aggregata foliis vivis parasitica, collected into minute clusters, parasitic on living leaves.

- [Erineum; fungus] in caespitulis latis congestis, collected into broad tufts.

- [fungi] situs rarius subsparsus: plerumque arcte congestus, caespitulis saepe longe lateque effusis, carbonaria paene tota obducentibus (S&A), the disposition [i.e. the manner of lying] more rarely somewhat scattered: usually tightly congested, with the little clumps often spread out far and wide, covering over nearly total charred [sc. places].

- [fungus] Aecidium Violae: (a) mole naturali; (b) folii pars retroflexa, ut cavitas appareat bullae respondens; (c) caespituli pars aucta (S&A), (a) the natural magnitude; (b) part of the leaf bent back, so that the cavity might appear, corresponding to the (hollow) swelling [i.e. at the center of a pileus]; (c) part of the clump enlarged.

- Peziza sanguinolenta: (a) magnitudine naturali; (b) caespitulus auctus; (c) cupulae magis etiam auctae (S&A), (a) at natural size; (b) the clump enlarged; (c) the cupules enlarged even more.

- [fungi] [var. beta], semel tantum inventa, et eiusdem quidem loci natalis, qui a, vulgatiorem fovet, particeps: verum ob characterem principem, sphaerulas nimirum aliquot solitarias circa caespitulum centralem sparsas (S&A), found only once, and even native of the same place, which [var.]‘a’, more commonly favors, as an associate; [but due to the chief character], the solitary sphaerules doubtless, in some quantity, are scattered around the central clump.

- [fungus] caespituli hypophylli, effusi, pallide brunnei, clusters hypophyllous [i.e. growing on the under surface of a leaf], effuse, pale brown.

- [S. quaternata; fungus] Ternae quaternaeve plerumque sunt sphaerulae: rarius tamen etiam 6/8 quasi e caespitulis duobus approximatis confluunt (S&A), the sphaerules are usually in threes or fours: more rarely even also 6/8 as if confluent from two nearby clusters.

- caespituli 1/3 linearum (S&A), the little clumps 1/3 of a line.

- vel sparsa, vel in caespitulos laxiusculos collecta (S&A), either scattered or in rather loose clusters collected.

- vel sparsa crescit, vel in caespitulos speciminum aliquot collecta (S&A), it grows either scattered, or several collected into little clusters of specimens.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
