A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Extremitas,-atis (s.f.III): extremity, the end of a thing; the termination; the outer edge, outline (Lewis & Short); the extremities;

Extremity (Eng.noun): the border, outline, perimeter; the end, extremity; the ending, suffix; the extreme condition or case; the furthest point or limit of something. The extreme degree or nature of something; the farthest or most remote part, section, or point; the end part, tip, vertex, terminus.

- cotyledonibus ad extremitatem in media hélice brevibus hamato-inflexis(B&H), with the cotyledons at the extremity in the middle spirally short, hamate-inflexed.

- Usnea loris longis dichotomis, extremitatibus tenuioribus. “Micheli’s wide forked Usnea, with finer Points” (Dill.), Usnea with the lora [i.e. strap-shaped thalli] long, dichotomous, thinner at the extremities [i.e. the points or ends].

- Usnea loris longis dichotomis, extremitatibus crassioribus. “Micheli’s wide forked Usnea with thicker Points” (Dill.), the Usnea with the lora [i.e. strap-shaped thalli] dichotomous, with thicker extremities.

- folia ad extremitates ramorum, leaves to the tips of branches (Stearn).

- folia in extremitatibus ramulorum tantum, leaves at the ends of the branches only (Stearn).

- indumento in extremitatibus inflorescentiarum tantum persistens, with the indument only on the extremities of the inflorescences persisting.

- stylus apice late peltato-dilatatus in umbraculam petaloideam, radiato- 5-nervem, 5-angulatam seu 5-lobam, subtus versus extremitatem nervorum minute 5-stigmatiferam (B&H), style at the apex broadle peltate-dilated into a petaloid umbracula [umbrella-shaped structure], radially 5-nerved, 5-angled or 5-lobed, underneath toward the extremity of the nerve minutely 5-stigmatiferous.

- cotyledonibus ad extremitatem minimis(B&H), with the cotyledones at the extremity minute.

- semina funiculo ad extremitatem hili linearis affixo(B&H), the seeds with the funiculus attached to the extremity of the linear hilum.

- radice fibrosa ad collum haud incrassata, fibris extremitate tumescentibus (F. Mueller), with the root fibrous, not thickened at the neck, with the fibers swelling at the end.

- stylus flexuosus glaber infra extremitatem subito perfecte refractus, (F. Mueller), style flexuose, smooth [i.e. hairless] below the end suddenly completely sharply bent back.

NOTE: fastigium,-ii (s.n.II), abl. sg. fastigio: a gable end or pediment, the gable top; the extreme part, extremity of a thing, whether above or below; top, height, summit, as of a hill; the lower part, depth; syn. cacumen, culmen, vertex, apex; see summit.
