A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
absque (prep. + abl.): without, lacking; except (for); “separately from, apart from, without, with the exception of” (Glare); see lacking;

- absque (te) esset, foret,‘were it not for, but for (you).

- absque sententia, without judgement, without opinion.

- Hab. Absque loco indicato, Humboldt in Herb. Hooker (Mitten), it grows, with the indicated place lacking, [on a specimen of Humboldt’s in the Hooker Herbarium).

- absque iconibus, lacking illustrations.

- nomen absque descriptione, name without a description.

- absque argumento, without argument (proof).

- receptaculum absque stipite distincto, receptable (fruit-body) without a distinct stipe.

- theca aequalis, cum vel absque annulo, theca uniform, with or without an annulus.

- calyptrae pars superior rarissime verticaliter erecta absque ulla declinatione inuenitur (B&H), the upper part of the calyptra is very rarely found vertically erect lacking any declination [i.e. bending from the vertical].

- discus epigynus nunc prominulus annuliformis, nunc absque disco conspicuo, the epigynous disc sometimes somewhat prominent, ring-shaped, sometimes with a conspicuous disc absent.

- folia pinnata absque impari (Swartz), the leaves pinnate except unequal [=abl.sg.].

- folióla pleraque 2-5 poll. longa cum vel absque impari (F. Mueller), the leaflets usually 2-5 pollicaria [i.e. 2-5 inches] long with or without an unequal one.

- variat petalis coccineis absque maculis, carneis, albis, coccineis albo marginatis vel albis coccineo marginatis (DeCandolle), it varies with the petals crimson, lacking spots, carnelian [i.e. deeply flesh-colored], white, crimson bordered with white or white bordered with crimson.
