clausus,-a,-um (part.A): closed, q.v., shut up, confined [> L. claudo, clausi, clausum, 3. to shut something that is open, to close, shut up (Lewis & Short); to close, end, conclude; to enclose, encompass, surround, hide, confine (Lewis & Short); opp. aperire, to open; opp. hians,-antis (part.B), ‘gaping, open-mouthed,’ and apertus,-a,-um (part.A), ‘open, opened;’ opp. patens,-entis (part.B), ‘spreading;’

- [fungus] primo epiphragmate clausum, dein apertum, at first [i.e. while young] closed by a membrane, afterwards open.

- inflorescentia simplex, clausa, racemosa, inflorescence unbranched, closed, racemose.

- fructus aut capsularis et indehiscens, apice clausus v. hians, aut raro baccatus (B&H), fruit either capsular and indehiscent, at the apex closed or gaping, or rarely berried.

- endocarpium utroque latere concavo-intromissum et pertusum, lóculos clausos haud formans (B&H), endocarp on either side concave-inserted and perforate, scarcely forming closed locules.

- nux 1-locularis, 1-sperma, apice demum hians v. clausa (B&H), nut with one locule, 1-seeded, at the apex ultimately gaping or closed.

- spiculae foemineae 1-florae, spicatae, gluma unica utriculiformi clausa (B&H), the female spikelets 1-flowered, spikate, with a single utricle-shaped hidden glume.

- (moss) perigonio dense clauso ovato longo-acuminato (Mueller), with the perigonium closely enclosed, ovate, long-acuminate.

- (algae) coenobium libere natans, sistens rete saccatum, oblongum, undique clausum, e cellulis per extremitates ternatim (rarius quaternatim, rarissimi binatim) coniunctis compositum (Braun), coenobium freely floating, exhibiting a saccate, oblong, network closed in every part, composed of cells throughout to the extremites, bound together in threes (more rarely in fours, extremely rarely in twos).

- Stipulae ad apices ramorum magnae, gemmam includentes, valvatim clausae, mox caducae cicatrice annulari relicta (B&H), the stipules large at the tips of the branches, enclosing the bud, closed by valves, in a little while falling away with a circular scar left behind.

Gentiana clausa Raf., Closed, Blind or Bottle-Gentian, the corolla 'scarcely opening' (Fernald 1950).

“The common Receptacle, (receptaculum commune), is of wide circumference, and contains a multitude of flowers. It is of the following kinds: Closed, (receptaculum clausum), having the form of a ball or pear, internally hollow, and the flowers seated on the inner surface, as in Ficus (Willdenow); see receptacle.
