- stylus clavatus, stigmate terminali vel sublaterali vel prope apicem laterali, style club-shaped with stigma terminal or almost lateral or near the apex lateral (Stearn).

- petala linearía v. clavata, petals linear or club-shaped [widest at the apex].

- calyce longissimo oblongo subclavato (Boissier), with the calyx very long, oblong [i.e. rounded-rectangular with parallel sides], nearly clavate.

clavato-bulbosus,-a,-um (adj.A): clavate-bulbous, (in fungi) “(of a stipe) having a bulb that tapers gradually upward” (S&D).

NOTE: cone-shaped, as applied to the fructifications of Equisetum, are referred to as ‘club-shaped:’ clavatus,-a,-um (adj.A), claviformis,-e (adj.B).

“The common Receptacle, (receptaculum commune), is of wide circumference, and contains a multitude of flowers. It is of the following kinds: Clubbed, (receptaculum clavatum), that is much prolonged and resembles a club, as in Arum” (Willdenow); see receptacle.

2. clavatus,-a,-um (part.A), from clavus (s.m.II), q.v., is also the participle of clavo,-avi,-atum, 1. to furnish or fasten with nails, nailed; furnished with points or prickles (clavata concha, a shell covered with prickles); also to furnish with a purple stripe, in the ceremonial dress of the Romans (Lewis & Short).

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
