A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

extinguens,-entis (part.B), exstinguens,-entis (part.B): extinguishing, quenching, putting out [> L. ex(s)tingui,-xi,-ctum 3. To extinguish, put out, quench, e.g. a thirst, an appetite; to kill, cause the death of; to wipe out, obliterate; to render void, extinguish.

extinguere; exstinguere Cassical. to extinguish, put out (fire, lamp. or sim.); to darken (as the sky); to quench (heated metal); to slake (lime or sulphur); to kill; (passive) to die; to put an end to (condition or sim.); to render null (right, custom); to cancel (interest) (GLARE).

exstinguunt: third person plural present active indicative: they annihilate; they quench.

- [Vitis indica] Caules 1. sarmenta inferiora hujus viminis copia aquae purissimae frigidaeque sunt repleti, detruncatione mox exstillantis. Hujus ope, íncolae, climatis torridi calori expositi, sitim non raro commodeque exstinguunt (Swartz), the stems or [l. = vel] lower sarmenta [of this flexible branch] are filled with an abundance of the purest and cold water, soon trickling out after detruncation [i.e. cutting or lopping off]. By this means, the inhabitants [i.e. natives] exposed to the heat of a torrid [i.e. parching] climate, not uncommonly completely extinguish [i.e. quench] their thirst.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
