lacking (Eng.adj.), destitute of, absent, none, unknown: opp. instructus,-a,-um (part.A, + abl.), furnished with, provided with; praeditus,-a,-um (part.A + abl.), provided with, possessed of;

1. absens,-entis (part.B): absent;

- staminibus absentibus, with stamens lacking.

- seta brevissima vel paene absens, seta very short or almost absent.

2. absque (prep. with abl.), q.v., without;

- nomen absque descriptione, name without a description.

- theca aequalis, cum vel absque annulo, theca uniform, with or without an annulus.

3. carens,-entis (part. B, + abl., q.v.);

- stipes pilis capitatis glanduliferis carentes, stipes lacking capitate glandular hairs.

- foliis carens, lacking leaves, leafless.

- cellulis chlorophyllo cassis, with cells devoid of chlorophyll.

- plantae nitore fere destitutae, plants almost lacking sheen (Stearn).

- medulla acidum echinocarpicum continente et acido lividico destituta, with the medulla containing echinocarpic acid and lacking lividic acid.

4. cassus,-a,-um (adj.A): empty, hollow, devoid of (with gen. or abl.);

- cellulis chlorophyllo cassis, with cells devoid of chlorophyll.

- lumine cassus, lacking light (dead or blind).

- capsula pilis, papillis, coloreque cassa, capsule lacking hairs, papillae and color.

5. deest (3rd person sg. indic. pres. of desum): 'it is wanting;'

desunt: they are wanting (third person plural indicative present of desum);

- capsula in speciminibus suppetentibus deest (F. Mueller), the capsule in the available specimens is absent.

- folliculus junior valde gibbus, maturus deest(F. Mueller), the younger follicle gibbous, the mature one absent.

- flores axillares solitarii nonnumquam desunt, the solitary axillary flowers sometimes absent.

6. deficiens,-entis (part.B): wanting.

- petala saepius 6, biseriatim valvata, exteriora carnosa, interiora subsimilia, nisi minora, v. rarius deficientia (B&H), the petals rather often 6, biseriately valvate, the outer fleshy, the inner somewhat similar except smaller or more rarely lacking.

7. demptus,-a,- um (part. A), deficiens,-entis (part.B); cf. absence, deest, expers.

8. destitutus,-a,-um (part.A + abl., q.v.);

- fibulis destitutus, with the clamps lacking.

- glandibus destitutus, lacking secretory organs (glands).

9. egens, egentis (part. B > egeo, -ui, 2. + abl. or genit.): lacking, in want of; see lacking;

- caulibus foliorum egentibus, with stems lacking leaves (in genitive).

- capsulae setis egentes, capsules lacking setae (in ablative).

10. expers (all genders, adj.B), gen. sing. expertis: free of, devoid of, without (+ gen. or + abl.);

- sepala glandum expertia, sepals devoid of glands (glands in genitive plural) (Stearn).

- capsula peristomio expers, capsule lacking a peristome (peristome in the ablative singular).

11. ignotus,-a,-um (adj.A): unknown:

- fructibus seminibusque ignotis, fruits and seeds unknown.

- capsula ignota, capsule unknown.

- teleomorpha ignota, teleomorph unknown.

- patria ignota, native land unknown.

12. nullus,-a,-um (irreg. adj.A): none, lacking, absent;

- hydathodia nulla, hydathodes none (i.e. absent).

- calcar aut nullum aut saccatum, spur either lacking or saccate.

13. orbatus,-a,-um (part.A): stripped of, deprived of, lit. 'bereaved [> L. orbo,-avi,-atum, 1. to bereave, deprive of + abl.];

- arbores foliis pro tempore orbatae haud sempervirentes, trees for a time stripped of leaves not evergreen (Stearn).

14. orbus,-a,-um (adj.A): deprived of, destitute with abl.;

- calyx squamis orbus, the calyx lacking scales.

15. sine (prep. with abl.): without, lacking, opposite of cum;

- sine floribus atque glandulibus olei, without flowers and glandules of oil.

- sine stomatibus, without stomates.

- sine numero, without a (collecting) numbe.

- cum vel sine petallis, with or without petals.

16. viduus,-a,-um (adj.A + abl.): deprived of, without, lacking;

- pileus aetate pilis viduus, pileus with age without hairs.

17. deficiens,-entis (part.B): wanting, lacking;

- petala saepius 6, biseriatim valvata, exteriora carnosa, interiora subsimilia, nisi minora, v. rarius deficientia (B&H), the petals rather often 6, biseriately valvate, the outer fleshy, the inner somewhat similar except smaller or more rarely lacking.

18. non suppetens,-entis (part.B): not available, not at hand, not present; see suppetens,-entis (part.B);

- flores maculi non suppetentes, male flowers not available [i.e. lacking].

- pedicelli solitarii, basi et ápice cicatricibus bractearum et bracteolarum fugacissimarum non suppetentium notati (F. Mueller), pedicels solitary, marked at the base and apex with the scars of the not present, very transitory bracts and bracteoles.

19. privatus,-a,-um (part.A): deprived of or parted from[ to deprive of.
