These pools were originally earth-bound, meaning that the bottom was not lined in concrete. When the Victorias were planted outside each summer, the horticulturists would plant them along the guideline to ensure that they were planted in straight rows. Today the pools have a concrete bottom and the Victorias are planted into permanent pots below the water line.
