The peak season of spring color continues with flowering Dogwoods,
woodland wildflowers and Azaleas in full bloom throughout the grounds.
The English Woodland, Japanese, and Azalea/Rhododendron Gardens are
especially showy.
Look for the large, showy Giant dogwood (Cornus controversa) near
the entrance to the English Woodland Garden north of the Lehmann
Building.
Many Silverbell trees (Halesia spp.) are flowering in the English
Woodland Garden. The understory plantings in this garden contain many
interesting plants now in full bloom.
Though Tulips are past peak bloom, the bulb borders remain very
showy with many "minor" bulbs and shade-tolerant perennials.
Some Dwarf bearded iris are now in bloom. Many Tall bearded iris
will start to flower before the end of the week, but peak bloom will
not begin until next week.
In the Shoenberg Temperate House, look for the showy red
Bottlebrush trees (Callistemson sp.) from Australia. Fragrant Spanish
broom (Spartium junceum) fills the house with its sweet aroma. Yellow Rose
trees (Rosa 'Sunsprite') in full glorious bloom decorate the tiled Moorish
fountain. Look on the rock wall beneath the grape arbor for the dramatic
yellow spikes of Verbascum arcturus from Crete.
n the Linnean House, fragrance abounds from the the brilliant
yellow flowers of the Canary Island broom standards (Genista
canariensis), the fragrant olive (Osmanthus fragrans) and jasmine
(Jasminum polythemum). The Camellias are nearly finished, but a few
beautiful blossoms remain.
