The peak season of spring bloom continues with dogwoods, azaleas and
woodland wildflowers in full bloom throughout the grounds. The English
Woodland Garden is particularly showy this week. White Spanish bluebells
carpet the ground in the Mausoleum Garden.
The azaleas in the Lopata Azalea and Rhododendron Garden are outstanding
this week.
The Japanese Garden is very showy this week. Highlights include flowering
dogwoods, azaleas, tree peonies, a few early herbaceous peonies and the
wisteria on Teahouse Island.
Tulips are past peak bloom, but many are still showy.
Standard dwarf bearded iris are blooming in the Goodman Iris Garden.
Many cultivars are also flowering in the Heckman Rock Garden.
The Shoenberg Temperate House is at its peak of spring blooming, and is filled
with the rich fragrance of Spanish broom (Spartium junceum). Brilliant
magenta African daisies (Osteospermum ‘Wildside’) cascade over the rocks
along the stairs. Bright red Australian bottlebrush trees (Callistemon
acuminatus and C. citrinus) are blooming upstairs, accompanied by
annual wildflowers from the mediterranean climates of the world.
Enjoy the heady aroma of jasmine (Jasminum polyanthemum) in the Linnean
House. Dainty fairy primroses (Primula malacoides ‘Prima series’) and
cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum ‘Concerto Cordelia’) decorate the beds.
