A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

-chaete,-es (s.f.I), also –chaeta,-ae (s.f.I): in Gk. comp. ‘bristle, long hair;’ this first declension noun may end in –e,-es (s.f.I), or –a,-ae (s.f.I). The noun, associated with each ending, has its own declensional paradigm in the first declension [> Gk. chaitE (s.f.I), loose, flowing hair; of a horse’s or lion’s mane, the crest of a helmet (Liddell & Scott)]; see First Declension; cf. seta,-ae (s.f.I); see Apposition, noun in;

            singular plural Amphochaeta,-ae (s.f.I), ‘bristle.’
   Nom. Amphochaeta -a Amphochaetae
   Gen. Amphochaetae -ae Amphochaetarum
   Dat. Amphochaetae -ae Amchochaetis
   Acc. Amphochaetam –am Amphochaetas
   Abl. Amphochaeta -a Amphochaetis
NOTE: the endings of –chaeta,-ae (s.f.I) are the same as typical first declension nouns.

As ‘chaeta,-ae (s.f.I),’ “a bristle. The slender stalk of the spore-case of Mosses. Same as seta” (Lindley). Achaeta,-ae (s.f.I), Amphochaeta,-ae (s.f.I), Anisochaeta,-ae (s.f.I), Aphantochaeta-ae (s.f.I), Brachychaeta,-ae (s.f.I), Calyptochaeta,-ae (s.f.I).

Nouns in apposition ending in -chaeta, may resemble an adjective, but may be detected in binomials when the ending of the epithet does not match the gender of the generic name.

Nouns in apposition: in Amblystegium (s.n.II) megachaete, for example, the epithet is a feminine noun; Acaulon (s.n.II) leucochaete; Acaulon rufochaete Astragalus (s.m.II) dolichochaete; Atrichum (a.m.II) chlorochaete; Bactris (s.f.III) leptochaete; Bryum (s.n.II) brachychaete; Bryum (s.n.II) chrysochaete; Carterothamnus (s.m.II) anomalochaeta.

Centrolobium robustum var. macrochaete; the varietal epithet modifies the genus, not the species epithet and is a noun in apposition.

            singular plural (Microchaete,-es, s.f.I)
   Nom. Microchaete -e Microchaetae
   Gen. Microchaetes -es Microchaetarum
   Dat. Microchaetae -ae Micranthis
   Acc. Microchaeten -en Micranthas
   Abl. Microchaete -e Micranthis
NOTE: the plural endings of names ending in –chaete,-es (s.f.I) are the same as regular first declension nouns in the plural: -chaetae, -chaetarum, -chaetis, -chaetas, -chaetis.

Agaricochaete,-es (s.f.I); Aphanochaete,-es (s.f.I); Bulbochaete,-es (s.f.I); Hymenochaete,-es (s.f.I); Irpicochaete,-es; Michrochaete, -es (s.f.I); Pleurochaete,-es (s.f.I); Soleochaete,-es (s.f.I).

NOTE: adjectives may re formed in –chaeus,-a,-um (adj.A), q.v.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
