A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

-coryne,-es (s.f.I): in Gk. comp. a club; it, like rhaphe, q.v., ends in an eta [> Gk. korynE (s.f.I), a club “freq. shod with iron for fighting, a mace; a shepherd’s staff; (in plants) knobby bud or shoot” (Liddell & Scott)]; see ‘club’ (Eng.noun); see First Declension.

In generic names, there is no ending in –coryna,-ae (s.f.I), neither is there an adjective ending in –corynus,-a,-um (adj.A).

NOTE: an epithet ending in –coryna must not be an adjective, and is likely a noun in apposition: Adinandra trichocoryna (Pentaphyllaceae).

          singular plural
   Nom. Microcoryne Microcorynae Microcoryne,-es (s.f.I).
   Gen. Microcorynes Microcorynarum
   Dat. Microcorynae Microcorynis
   Acc. Microcorynen Microcorynas
   Abl. Microcoryne Microcorynis
NOTE: the plural endings of names ending in –coryne,-es (s.f.I) are the same as regular first declension nouns in the plural.

- Cryptocoryne,-es (s.f.I) > Gk. kryptos, hidden + koryne, a club; shape of flowers. Araceae (Paxton).

- Holocoryne,-es.

Used in subgeneric categories: Eriocoryne,-es (s.f.I), Dendrocoryne; Leucocoryne; Platycoryne; Sphaerocoryne.

Used in epithets: acanthocoryne, brachycoryne, microcoryne, orthocoryne, which appear to be nouns in apposition as the epithets (f.) often do not match the gender of the genera, e.g. Costus erythrocoryne.

Cereus coryne, Stetsonia coryne (Cactaceae) are nouns in apposition (note the gender of Cereus (m.) does not match the gender of the epithet (f.)

Corynebacterium,-ii (s.n.II), from the club-shaped bacteria (little rods); C. glutamicum; C. propinquum; C. striatum.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
