A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Achras,-adis (s.f.III), abl.sg. achrade; = Gk. achras, “a wild pear-tree” (Lewis & Short); achras,-ados (s.f.III), “a kind of wild pear, Pyrus amygdaliformis; used for the tree as well as the fruit” (Liddell & Scott); see pear (Eng.noun).

“The Greek name for the pear, ["or from ‘ac,’ meaning a point, in Celtic, in allusion to the stiff spines with which the tree is covered" (sic)]. Sapotaceae (Paxton).

Achras (f.) “name of Greek derivation for a kind of wild pear which Linnaeus transferred to the sapodilla or naseberry (Manilkara zapota, Achras zapota) and the sapote, mammee sapote or marmalade plum (Pouteria sapota, Calocarpum sapota). Sapotaceae” (Stearn 1996).
