A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Advena,-ae (s.m.,f.,n.I), abl. sg. advena: one who comes to a place; a foreigner, stranger or alien; an immigrant;

As an adjective: strange, foreign, alien; recently arrived, new to (syn.: peregrinus, externus, exterus, alienus, alienigena; opp. indigena, native);

- [Boreava] species unica Asiae Minoris, in Gallia meridionali advena (B&H), a single species of Asia Minor, adventive in southern France.

- [Oligomeris] species 4, quarum 3 austro-Africanae; in California quoque reperta, sed forsan advena (B&H), species 4, of which 3 are South-African; also found in California, but perhaps adventive.

- [Cerastium] per totum fere orbem terrarum obviae, inter tropicos tamen omnes alpicolae nisi advenae (B&H), encountered throughout almost the whole circle of the earths, yet between the tropics all are alpine unless they are adventive.

- species ad 30, in Australasia, India boreali, Americaque boreali temperata omnino desunt, v. advenae (B&H), species to 30, in Australasia, northern India, and completely absent in boreal temperate America.

- species ad 6 ab Australia tamen alienae, etsi advenae (B&H), species to six, yet out-of-place, even if adventive.

- species ad 15 v. 20, hemisphaerii totius borealis regionibus temperatis calidisque incolae, in australi (advenis exceptis) nullibi repertae, pleraeque valde variabiles, et ab auctoribus hodiernis inordinate multiplicatae (B&H), species to 15 or 20, an inhabitant of the whole northern hemisphere in temperate and hot regions, in the austral [sc. Region] (adventives excepted) found nowhere, many of the strongly variable, and unreasonably multiplied by modern authors.

Nuphar advena (Ait.) Ait., (immigrant 'when grown in Europe' Fernald 1950, although native to North America.

Nuphar, although presently a feminine genus, was long considered neuter, hence the epithet is a noun in apposition.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
