A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Agate (Eng.noun): [> Middle French, from L. achates, from Gk. achatEs] “a fine-grained chalcedony frequently mixed with opal and having various colors arranges in stripes of bands, blended in clouds, or showing mosslike forms; [also] iron-oxide red” (WIII); (of color) a pale red, a lovely reddish color [> L. achates,-ae (s.m. and f., I) = Gk. [ho] achatEs, “the agate, so called from Achates, a river in Sicily where it was first found; Achates,-ae (s.m.I): “a river in the southern part of Sicily between Thermae and Selinus, now unknown” (Lewis & Short).

- [Suillus; fungus] sulphurei, & Achatae, seu suave-rubentis coloris (Mich.), of a sulphureous [i.e. Sulphur-yellow] [sc. color], or the lovely-reddish color of Agate.

- [Suillus; fungus] esculentus, Alpinus, crassus, desuper sulphureus, cute lacera, quasi hirsute, inferne Achatae dilutissimo rubore praeditus (Mich.), edible, of alpine [i.e. high-mountains], thick, a Sulphur color from on top, with a tattered [i.e. deeply and irregularly divided by deep incisions] skin, as though hairy, provided in the lower part with the very pale redness of agate.

- [Italian; fungus] colore di Agata (Mich.) with the color of agate.

Iaspachates,-ae (s.m.I): a jasper-like variety of agate (Glare) [> Gk. iaspachatEs]; see jasper.
