Amber: sucinum,-i (s.n.II) (succinum), abl.sg. sucino (succino), nom. & acc. pl. sucina (succina), dat. & abl. pl. sucinis (succinis); electrum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. electro, the word used in the Roman period [> Gk. elektron (initial eta)]; Lat. succinum,-i (s.n.II) [> L. succus,-i (s.n.II), juice; > L. sucinum,-i (s.n.II, amber]; sacrium,-ii (s.n.II): Scythian, “Scythian amber” (Lewis & Short);

- arbuscula resinam pelluciditate et colore succinum aemulantem exsudans. (F. Mueller), a small tree exsuding a resin resembling amber in transparancy and color.

NOTE: Liquidambar L., Sweet Gum “Two N. Am. and two Asiatic trees. (A mongrel name, from liquidus, ‘fluid,’ and the Arabic ambar, ‘amber;’ in allusion to the fragrant terebinthine juice or gum which exudes from the tree” (Fernald 1950); in allusion to the sweet resinous sap. The epithet ‘Styraciflua’ L. means ‘flowing with Styrax, i.e. the resinous gumor the Styrax tree; see styrax,-acis (s.m.III).
