Ambitus,-us (s.m.IV) abl. sg. ambitu: a circuit, circular motion, revolution; circumference, outline, the exterior edge or periphery, perimeter; the orbit of a heavenly body; = circuitus,-us (also circumitus,-us)(s.m.IV), abl. sg. circu(m)itu: periphery, circumference [> L. ambio (see ambiens); see circumference, outline;

a: ‘outline;’

- pileus in ambitu irregularis, the pileus irregular in circumference.

- frons bipinnata ambitu ovata 25 cm. longa, frond bipinnate in outline ovate 25 cm. long.

- fronde laciniis ambitu vix definitis, with a fronde with laciniae that are scarcely definite in outline.

- folia ambitu variabilia, integra, repanda vel lobulata, leaves in outline variable, entire, repand or lobulate.

- pinnae trunco multoties angustiores, ambitu late triangulares (Steph.), the pinnae many times narrower than the pinnae, in outline broadly triangular.

- folia ambitu diversa basin versus haud dilatata, apice latiuscula, subito in cuspidem contracta, leaves diverse in outline, toward the base scarcely dilated, with a somewhat wide apex, suddenly contracted into a cusp.

b: ‘circumference;’

- ambitus (s.m.IV) zonalis (adj.B), abl. sg. ambitu zonali: circumferencial zone.

- capitula disciformia, floribus in ambitu pistillatis paucis apetalis (B&H), the capitula disciform, with flowers pistillate on the periphery few, without petals.

- species nova coloniis in CYA post 7 dies in temperatura 25C crescentibus pallide carneolis, in parte aversa in centro brunneis in ambitu pallide bubalinis distinguenda, new species to be distinguished by colonies growing in CYA after 7 days at a temperature of 25C pale somewhat flesh colored, on the backside brown in the center, pale tan on the circumference.

- mares, flosculorum androgynorum, in centro fructificationis; feminae, in ambitu (Necker), the males of the androgynous florets, in the center of the fructification; the females on the periphery.

- [liverwort) frond segmentis linearibus, dichotomis, dichotomiarum angulis patentibus, radiato-expansis, ita ut frondis totius ambitus sit subrotundus (Hooker), the frond with linear, dichotomous [i.e. forked] segments, with the angles of the dichotomies [i.e. forks] spreading, expanded ina radiant manner, so that thus the circumference of the whole frond may be nearly round.

NOTE: This word can be used for "edge", q.v.: extremus ambitus campi (Cassell’s), the outermost edge of the field; also in the sense of a composition, its 'outline.'

- ambitus totius systematis ramificationis, outline of the whole system of branching (Stearn).
