A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Cambium, “the viscid fluid which appears between the bark and wood of Exogens, when the new wood is forming. Also the mucus of vegetation out of which all new organs aare produced” (Lindley); “(Mediaeval Lat., = exchange) “a layer of nascent tissue between the wood and bast, adding elements to both; formerly considered as a mere viscous mass” (Jackson); “a layer, usually regarded as one cell thick, of persistent meristematic tissue (referring to vascular and cork cambia); or a persistent meristematic layer which gives rise to secondary wood and secondary ploem (vascular cambium)” (Fernald 1950); “a formative layer one cell thick occurring between the xylem and phloem of most vascular plants, being persistently capable of giving rise to new cells, often for many years in woody plants, and being responsible for secondary growth” (WIII): cambium,-ii (s.n.II), abl. sg. cambio, nom. & acc. pl. cambia, gen. pl. cambiorum, dat. & abl. pl. cambiis; cf. meristem;

Cambium fasciculare, abl. sg. cambio fasciculari, the fascicular cambium, “that portion which belongs to the vascular bundles” (Jackson).

Cambium interfsciculare, abl. sg. cambio interfasciculari, “that which is formed between the vascular bundles, and the primary meduallary rays” (Jackson).
