A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Canis,-is (s.c.III), abl.sg. cane, nom. & acc. pl. canes, dat. & abl.pl. canibus: a dog;

NOTE: although apparently an i-stem noun, the genitive plural is canum (not ‘canium’).

- caterva canum, a pack of dogs.

- rabies Canis, (rage of the dog) “the fierce heat of the dog-star” (Lewis & Short).

Canis, gen.sg. Canis: Can- + -idae > family Canidae.

NOTE: Eng. Canid., Eng.pl. Canids: member of the family Canidae, dogs.

Erythronium Dens-canis, Dog-tooth Violet.

[Lichen] Peltigera canina: ad canis rabidi morsus symptomata præcavenda (Dill.), for preventing the symptoms for the bite of a rabid dog.
