A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Carpophore (Eng.noun), stalk-like structure supporting a sporocarp, gynoecium or mericarp; “the stalk of the pistil above or beyond the stamens” (Lindley); “1. the stalk of a sporocarp; 2. that part of the receptacle which is prolonged between the carpels as a central axis, as in Ceramium; 3. used by Fayod as inclusive of stipe, pileus and lamellae of Fungi” (Jackson); “the slender prolongation of the floral axis which in the Umbelliferae supports the pendulous ripe carpels” (Fernald 1950); (in fungi), the stalk of the sporocarp, q.v.; sometimes (esp. in France) used for the complete fruit body of higher fungi (Ainsworth & Bisby); (fungi) “1. the stalk of the sporocarp (Lagarde, 1906); 2. the term used by most French mycologists to include pileus, stipe and gills or tubes, etc. or the entire fruit body, of the higher fungi” (S&D): carpophorum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. carpophoro” (Jackson): carpophorium,-ii (s.n.II), abl. sg. carpophorio, nom. & acc. pl. carpophora, gen. pl. carpophororum, dat. & abl. pl. carpophoris; cf. the stilboid, q.v. form of carpophore; cf. anthophore, gynophore; see stalk; see carpophyllum,-i (s.n.II);
