A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Collis,-is (s.m.III), abl.sg. colle: a hill, high ground; (in pl.) uplands or highlands; see foothill; cf. upland; see hill; cf. podium,-ii (s.n.II), q.v., abl.sg. podio: an elevated place, a height; a hill, hillock; opp. valley, q.v., vallis,-is (s.f.III); - [Sisymbrium] in asperis et ruderatis collium et vallium Galliae austr. (DeCandolle), in the rugged and stony [i.e. waste; sc. places] of the hills and valleys of southern France.

- (sloping, lying) uphill: adverso colle, adversus collem; opp. downhill: secundo colle, adversus collem; opp. downhill: secundo colle, secundum collem, ‘following’ the hill.

- ad truncos in silva collis Sapotilla loco dicto "Achate," on trunks (of trees) in the forest of the hill Sapotilla in a place called "Achate."

- in rupibus collium Oakland prope San Francisco, on the rocks of the hills of Oakland near San Francisco.

- in pratis collium Taurinensium(DeCandolle),in the grasslands of the Taurine hills.

- in collibus graniticis tractus Futters Range et in montibus Mayday-Hills (F. Mueller), in the granitic uplands of the region of the Futters Range and in the mountains of the Mayday Hills.

- incolit colles áridos & sepes Jamaicae australis (Swartz), it inhabits the arid hills and [hedges] of southern Jamaica.

- in collibus dumosis ad montem West Mount Barren (F. Mueller), in spiny-shrubby hills [i.e. uplands] on West Mount Barren mountain.

- Hab. in arvis et collibus siccis circa Marbella (Boissier), it grows in dry fields and hills around Marbella.

- in collibus ad margines agrorum (C. Mueller), on uplands at the edges of cultivated fields.

- in collibus aridis rupestribus basalticis ad rivum Dépot Creek, fluvii Victoriae, nec in humidis (F. Mueller), on the dry, rocky basalt hills on the river Depot Creek of the Victoria River, not in moist places.

- ad saxa in scaturiginibus collium editorum Chilensium (C. Mueller), on stones in the gushing waters of the higher hills [i.e. uplands] of Chile.

- [Dicranum lepidophyllum; moss] in collibus formicosis antiquis editi secundi prope Gnetpagar district (C. Mueller), in ancient hillocks of the second upland [i.e. mentioned] full of ants near Gnetpagar district [= districtum,’ acc. sg.].

- eas species semper distinctas vidi. L. spica colles humiliores, L. lanata montes autem habitat, ad altitudinem 6500' pedum scandens (Boissier), I always consider these species distinct, L. spica inhabits the lower hills, L. lanata however, climbs to an altitude of 6500 feet.

NOTE: see collum,-i (s.n.II), the neck, dat. & abl. pl. collis.
