A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Columen,-inis (s.n.II), abl.sg. culumine; also culmen,-inis (s.n.III), abl.sg. culmine: an elevated object, a pillar, column; an elevated object that supports something; a support, prop; anything high (e.g. of the stalk of a bean) (after Lewis & Short); see prop (Eng.noun);

NOTE: columna,-ae (s.f.I), which ... is originally a collateral form” [of columen,-inis (s.n.II)] (Lewis & Short); see ‘column (Eng.noun).’

- columna vitium, the props of vines [vitis,-is (s.f.III)

- [Agaricum; fungus] Autumni tempore Acerum campestrium semimortuarum caudicibus, necnon Vitium columnis, & guandoque in sylvis ad glandiferas arbores (Mich.), in the season of Autumn on the trunks of half-dead Acer campestre, and also on the stakes [i.e. props] of vines and sometimes in forests on nut-bearing trees.

Culmen,-inis (s.n.III), abl. sg. culmine: top; summit (as of a mountain) [> L. culmen,-inis s.n.III, the top, summit, ridge of a roof = contracted form of columen,-inis (s.n.II)];

- culmen superius (adj.A): crownshaft, trunk-like extension of top of palm trunk formed by erect petiole-bases enclosing terminal bud; cf. Gentes Herb., 7: 178 (1946) (Stearn).
