A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Comes,-itis (s.c.III), abl. sg. comite: (eccles.) “companion,associate, count, earl, official” (Stelten);

1. a companion, comrade, associate, partaker, sharer; attendant, servant; (late classical, medieval Latin) a count (= English Earl); partner (whether male or female); the suite, retinue of friends, relatives, scholars ... which accompanied magistrates into the provinces; the attendants of distinguished private individuals (Lewis & Short). Principal officials of the later Roman Empire.

Band, train, procession, suite; collection, array, group, set; a troop (Wiktionary May 2019).

- Pius Nicolaus Garellius Aug. Rom. Imper. Caroli VI. Archiatrorum Comes, Consiliarius, & Bibliothecae Praefectus (Mich.), Pius Nicolaus Garellius, Associate of the court physicians, Counselor and Director of the Library of the Holy Roman Emperor Carl VI.

- [fungi] rarior in regionibus nostris praecoxque species aliquoties in sylvaticis sicciusculis, praesertim in pinetis viarum comes etc. reperta fuit. D. Blaso Biagi, a monk of the Congregation of Vallis-Umbrosa, an uncommon botanist, and an often diligent companion with regard to hunting plants in our Etrurian travels.

2. Comites, gen. pl. comitium (pl.m.III), acc. pl. comites, dat. & abl. pl. comitibus: in mosses, stereid cells [> L. comes,-itis (s.m.III), a companion, an associate; a tutor, guide, teacher]; cf. satelles,-itis (s.c.III), abl. sg. satellite, nom. & acc. pl. satellites: (in pl.) attendants, escort, train, retinue; an assistant, partner; see stereid.

3. Haga Comitis, Haga Comitum: the Hague, Netherlands > Dutch haag “dedge, hedgerow’ + gen.sg. comes, the Count, or Count’s hedgerow [enclosure]; reference Count Floris IV’s hunting lodge.

4. Count (Eng.noun) “> LL comit-, comes, > L. associate, companion, one of the imperial court or train, lit., one who goes with another, > com- + it- -es, > ire, to go: a European nobleman whose rank corresponds to that of an English earl” (WIII).

5. Comes stabuli, the Constable, the attendant in charge of the stables of the imperial court (Byzantium); see stabulum,-I (s.n.II).



Congregatio,-onis (s.f.III), abl. sg congregatione: a crowd; an assembly, society, union, association, q.v.; a swarm; see group; congregation, a community bound by a common rule” (Stelten); see ‘swarm;’

- congregatio apium, a swarm of bees.

In the Roman Curia, a congregation (Sacræ Cardinalium Congregationes) is a type of department of the Curia (Wikipedia Dec 2019)

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF = Congregatio pro Doctrina Fidei) is the oldest among the nine congregations of the Roman Curia, seated at the Palace of the Holy Office in Rome. It was founded to defend the church from heresy; today, it is the body responsible for promulgating and defending Catholic doctrine (Wikipedia Dec 2019).

Congregationes Romani: “Roman congregations; permanent communittees of cardinals, bishops, and others in Rome in charge of various aspects of the administration and governance of the Church” (Stelten);
