A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Dens, gen.sg. dentis (s.m.III), abl. sg. dente, nom. & acc. pl. dentes, gen. pl. dentium (i-stem noun), dat. & abl. pl. dentibus: tooth, prong; see tooth; cf. cusp (a sharp and rigid point);

- Indicus dens, ‘ivory;’ dens, gen.sg. dentis (s.m.III), q.v. indicus, abl.sg. dente indico, ‘ivory’ (also indicum cornu).

- dens canis, tooth of a dog.

- dens leonis, tooth of a lion.

- dens (s.m.III) molaris, gen.sg. dentis molaris, abl.sg. dente molari, the grinding tooth, molar [> L. molaris,-e (adj.B): of or belonging to a mill or to grinding].

- dentibus ciliiformibus differt, it differs by the ciliiform teeth.

- sépala nunc distincta imbricata v. rarius valvata, nunc in calycem saepius parvum lobis dentibusve imbricatis apertis v. rarius valvatis coalita (B&H), sepals sometimes separated, imbricated, more rarely valvate, sometimes somewhat fused into the calyx with lobes or teeth imbricate, open or more rarely valvate.

- stamina longiora connata, v. appendiculata v. basi dente aucta.(B&H), stamens longer, fused, or appendiculate or augmented at the base with a tooth.

- dentibus 3 parvis cum unguibus alternis, with teeth 3, small, alternate with the claws.

- clinandrium in dentem longum antheriferum productum.(B&H), clinandrium extended into a long, anther-bearing tooth.

- clinandrium antice 2-angulatum v. in dentes 2 breves productum. (B&H), clinandrium antically 2-angled or extended into 2 short teeth.

- anthera denti postico afflxa, anther attached to a postical tooth.

- interdum alae columnae infra brachia utrinque dente minore appendiculatse (B&H), sometimes the wings of the column below the arms on each side appendaged with a smaller tooth.

- columnae angulae anticae vix in dentés productae (B&H), the angles of the column at the front scarcely extended into teeth.

- anthera denti postico clinandrii affixa (B&H), the anther attached to the postical tooth of the clinandrium.

- (moss) dentibus peristomii linea mediana longitudinali in acumine dissoluta notatis, (DozyMoek), with the teeth of the peristome marked with a longitudinal median line, dissolved in the acumen.

molariformis,-e (adj.B): molariform, (in fungi) “shaped like a molar tooth, with flattened crown” (S&D) [> L. molaris, belonging to a mill > molere, to grind + forma, shape].

Dandelion or ‘dent de lion,’ “lion’s tooth,” from the medaeval Latin dens leonis, in reference to its “sharply indented leaves” (WIII).
