A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Enula,-ae (s.f.I), following Linnaeus, a synonym of Inula and Helenium [> L. Inula,-ae (s.f.I): “elecampane, a plant (Inula helenium L.)” (Lewis & Short) = Gk. (h)elenion].

Enula,-ae Boehm.(s.f.I) [sec. Tropicos] = Inula Helenium L. Compositae.

- enulae foliis (Swartz) with the leaves of [Enula].

Inula,-ae “the Latn name. I. helenium is elecampane. Compositae” (Stearn 1990).

Inula (Medieval Latin): elecampene (= Inula helenium); classical Latin from Gk. [h]elenion (Howlett et al.). In the medieval period, also ‘spring onion (Allium cepa) and a species of dock (Rumex) (Howlett et al.).

Enula campana, also allicampane; also hinnula campana. ‘campana’ derives from Campania (Southern Italy), where it was considered to grow in the wild state.

(pharm.) the drug, Elecampane (Radix Inulae), consists of both rhizome or rootstock and roots.

Helenium. “the Greek name of some plant, said by Linnaeus to be named after Helena (Helen of Troy), wife of King Menelaus of Sparta” (Fernald 1950).

(h)elenion (s.n.II): calamint, Calamintha incana; elecampane, Inula Helenium (Liddell & Scott).
