A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Erinaceus,-i (s.m.II), abl.sg. erinaceo: also herinaceus,-ei (s.m.II), abl.sg. herinaceo: Lat., a hedgehog, q.v.; cf. ericius,-ii (s.m.II).

NOTE: this is not an adjective.

NOTE: also ‘irenaceus,-i (s.m.II), abl.sg. irenaceo through transposition (i.e. metathesis) of the initial ‘i’ and first ‘e’ > erinaceus,-i (s.m.II) (sec. Glare). Note also one of the definitions of ‘Iris,-is (s.m.III), abl.sg. ire;’ “N.B. perhaps better written er- [long –e] (the form of the word extant in later Latin). A hedgehog” (Glare).

Er, gen.sg. eris (s.m.III), abl.sg. ere, hedgehog; cf. Gk. chEr, gen.sg. chEros, hedgehog (Liddell & Scott); see hedgehog.

Erinaceus,-i (s.m.II) Linnaeus, 1758, a genus of hedgehogs; family Erinaceidae [erinace- + -idae]. Genera in the Erinaceidae: Atelerix, Erinaceus, Hemiechinus, Mesechinus, Paraechinus; see echinus,-i (s.m.II); see echinus,-i (s.m.II).

Erinaceus europaeus = European hedgehog; a mammal covered with spiny hairs.

[Hericiaceae; fungus] Hericium erinaceus = Hydnum erinaceus, lion’s lane fungus, also bearded hedgehog mushroom; note the epithet is a noun in apposition; Hericium and Hydnum are both neuter nouns; erinaceus is a masculine noun. This fungus is characterized by its long spines (greater than 1 cm length), and tendency to grow a single clump of dangling spines.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
