A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Fex (s.f.III), gen.sg. fecis, abl. sg. fece, nom. & acc. pl. feces, gen. pl. fecum or fecium, dat. & abl. pl. fecibus; also faex (s.f.III), gen.sg. faecis, abl. sg. faece, nom. & acc. pl. faeces, gen. pl. faecum or faecium, dat. & abl. pl. faecibus: “bodily waste discharged through the anus: dung, manure” (WIII) {> L. faex, gen.sg. faecis, dregs, sediment: the lees, sediment dregs of liquids; burnt tartar or salt of tartar; the brine of pickles; sediment or other impurities (Lewis & Short)]; see dung; see fecula,-ae (s.f.I).

Faeces faecum (plur.), excrement, solid motions.

As sediment:

- faecem unguenti magma appellant, they call ‘magma’ the sediment [i.e. dregs] of an unguent or ointment; see magma,-atis (s.n.III).

- faecem et allec (acc.sg.neut.), pickle- and fish-brine.

Faex,-cis (s.f.III), abl. sg. faece, grounds, sediment.

- faecula faex est vini vel aceti quae coquitur et reponitur (Galen in Everett), faecula [i.e. wine lees] is the dregs of wine or vinegar.

- faex illa pigmentum est: siccatur id sole, & sacco cannabino percolatur, mox efformantur parvae rotae, quae catinis superpositis carbonibus solidantur, ut recondi tandem queat in annuos usus (Ray), that sediment [i.e. residue, dregs] is the pigment: it is dried in the sun, and, strained through a hempen sac, soon afterwards small wheels are formed, which, made solid in cooking pots placed over the coals, so that finally it could be stored in one-year applications.

Sacchari faex: (pharm.) molasses [sacchari = gen.sg. saccharum].

Faex,-cis (s.f.III) medicinalis, abl. sg. faece medicinali, beer yeast.

Faex,-cis (s.f.III) sacchari, treacle; also theriaca,-ae (s.f.I).
