A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Herbaria,-ae (s.f.I) (sc. ars): the knowledge of plants, botany [> L. herbaria,-ae (s.f.I): “the science of herbs; (in pl.) herbivorous beasts (in the classification of animals for the amphitheater” (Glare]; see botany (Eng.noun);

NOTE: not the neuter plural (herbaria) of herbarium,-ii (s.n.II), q.v.

- herbariam et medicamentariam a Chirone volunt repertam (Pliny), they [desire] from Chiron the study of herbs [i.e. plants] and (the art of) pharmacy learned.

- res (s.f.V) herbariae [gen.sg. herbaria,-ae (s.f.I), botany), the business of botany, botanical affairs.

- institutiones rei herbariae, elements of botany (Stearn).

- institutiones rei herbariae, elements of botany (Stearn); also principles of botany.

NOTE: Herbarium,-ii (s.n.II), q.v., a collection of dried plants (for study).

Herbarius,-ii (s.m.II, q.v., a herbalist, one who studies herbs (plants).

NOTE: there is no adj. herbarius,-a,-um (adj.A).
