Lacus,-us (s.m.IV), acc. sg. lacum, abl. sing. lacu, nom. & acc. pl. lacus, gen. pl. lacuum, dat. & abl. pl. lacubus: lake; a lake, pond [> L. “originally anything hollow, hence ... a large vessel for liquids, a basin, tank, tub” vat, a tank of water; “A large body of water which rises and falls (opp. stagnum, a standing pool), a lake, pond ... a large reservoir for water, a basin, tank, cistern (Lewis & Short); in Gk. comp. limn-, limno-, q.v., pertaining to standing or stagnant water, pools, lakes, marshes; see pool, tarn (a small mountain lake or pool);

NOTE: the spelling of the dat. and abl. pl.: it is not lacibus, as in other nouns of Decl.IV.

- species littora lacuum habitantes, species inhabiting the shores of lakes (Stearn).

- habitat in fundo lacuum, it inhabits the bottom of lakes.

- in lacubus Sueciae, Borussiae, in lakes of Sweden and Prussia.

- in sylvis prope lacum Ontario (DeCandolle), in forests near lake Ontario.

- in litoribus Lacus Superioris, Lacus Ontarionis, Eriensis Lacus, Michiganensis Lacus et Lacus Huronis on the shores of Lake Superior, Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

- lacus montanus, abl. sg. lacu montano, a tarn, a mountain lake or pool; see tarn.

- species 1, lacuum Europae, Sibiriae, et Americae borealis indigena (B&H), species one, a native of the lakes of Europe, Sibiria and north America.
