A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Mola,-ae (s.f.I), millstone; in the plural (molae), a mill; “a false conception, moon-calf, mole” (Lewis & Short); a jawbone, the teeth; see mill (Eng.noun).

Mole (Eng.noun) > L. moles, ‘mass’ “a mound or massive work formed of masonry and large stones or earth laid in the sea as a pier or breakwater; the harbor formed by such a work” (WIII).

- [algae] Hab. ad saxa molarum rupesque in limite maris utriusque frequens (Agardh), it grows on the rocks of moles [i.e. piers or breakwaters] and rocks on the boundary of [each of the two] seas.

- [algae] Hab. in sinubus tranquillis soleque expositis ad Saxa in limite maris; intra molam portus Liburnici frequentem legi (AGARDH), Habitat: I have collected it frequently in the tranquile bays exposed to the sun on stones at the boundary of the sea; within the breakwater of the Liburnian [i.e. Croatian] port.

- [algae] Hab. in sinubus obscuriusculis paulo infra superficiem maris; ad saxa molae extra portum Liburniae, ad Amalfi regni Neapolitani (Agardh), it grows in the somewhat darker-water bays slightly below the surface of the sea; on the stones of the mole [i.e. breakwater] beyong the port of Liburnia, at Amalfi of the Kingdom of Naples.

- [algae] Hab. in sinubus magis absconditis et tranquillis inter Algas et Corallinas repens; ad saxa molae extra portum Liburniae, et Massiliae (Agardh), it grows in bays more hidden and calm, creeping among the algae and Corallina [sc. species]; on the stones of the breakwater outside of the port of Liburnia and Massilia.

NOTE: see moles (s.f.III) gen. sg. molis, abl. sg. mole: a mass, bulk, a heap.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
