A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Nastes,-is (s.m.III), abl.sg. naste: an occupant, inhabitant, dweller; one situated in [> Gk. nastEs,-ou (s.m.) = nastEr,-Eros (s.m.III) inhabitant [> Gk. naiO: (of persons) dwell, abide, mostly followed by a prep. of place (Liddell & Scott); (of places) lie be situated.]; cf. –cola,-ae (s.f.I).

NOTE: not ‘-astes.’

-nastes,-is (s.m.III), abl.sg. –naste: in Gk. comp. a dweller or inhabitant of a (specified) place; [like –cola,-ae (s.f.I) the word is a noun in apposition to its genus].

Anconastes,-is (sm.III) [anco-nastes,-is (s.m.III)]: extinct animal (fossil) genus of a dissorophoid temnospondyl; > Gk. ankos (mountain glen or valley) + nastes, inhabitant (the fossil was found in a canyon); Anconastes vesperus.

Acacia acrionastes [The specific epithet (acrionastes) means "hilltop-occupant"; [> Gk. akris,-os, hilltop, peak, + nastes, an occupant, a reference to the habitat of the species. It should be treated as a noun functioning as an adjective (see Stearn, 1973, p. 98; from the protologue [nastEs,-ou (s.m. ... = nastEr,-Eros: inhabitant]; Racosperma acrionastes (Fabaceae); Rhododendron recurvum var. oreonastes (Ericaceae).

Bulbophyllum oreonastes (Orchidaceae) probably “mountain-dweller” and a masc. noun in apposition; Phyllorchis oreonastes (Orchidaceae).

Myriophyllum sect. and subsect. Pelonastes (Haloragaceae); pElos: clay, earth, potter’s clay; mud, mire; probably ‘mud-dweller’ + nastes (not in Liddell & Scott).

heleonastes,-is (s.m.III), swamp-dweller [> Gk. heleo, ‘swamp’ + nastes, ‘inhabitant;’ swamp-dweller.

Solanum heleonastes (Solanacese) “The specific epithet of this species, "heleo" meaning swamp and "nastes" meaning inhabitant, refers to the unusual habitat of this species” only in the swampy forests on the margins and islands in the upper Rio Parana” (from the protologue).

Carex heleonastes (Cypressaceae); Gentiana heleonastes (Gentianaceae); Hirculus heleonastes (Saxifragaceae); Mentha x heleonastes (Lamiaceae); Saxifraga heleonastes (Saxifragaceae); Swertia bifolia var. heleonastes (Gentianaceae); Taraxacum heleonastes (Asteraceae); Vignea heleonastes (Cyperaceae).
