A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Patriarcha,-ae (s.m.I), also patriarchEs, ae (s.m.I): patriarch; > Gk. patriarchEs, the father, head of a family, or chief of a tribe, a patriarch; a chief bishop, a patriarch (Lewis & Short);

honorific title of certain bishops of the highest rank in the early Church, those of Atioch, Alexandria, and Rome; bishops having authority over other bishops in the province. The highest form of bishop, ancient authority over other bishops in ancient world; “in Roman Catholicism, considered a bishop second only to the Pope in rank” (Wikipedia ‘patriarch’ 2021); (the Pope himself = the Bishop of Rome);

"in the Eastern Church, a bishop who has jurisdiction over all the bishops, including metropolitans, and over the clergy and people of a territory or a special rite. He is a bishop with supra-episcopal jurisdiction. In the Latin Church, a bishop who enjoys no special jurisdiction, as his title is one that carries with it only a prerogative of honor and the right of precedence over Primates” (Stelten) [> Gk. patEr (s.m.II) a father + archE, an authority, magistracy]; see -archa,-ae (s.m.I).

PatriarchEs,-ae (s.m.I] “the father or chief of a race, a patriarch (New Testament)” (Liddell & Scott)[> Gk. patria, a clan, house, family (Liddell & Scott)].
