A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Peltaria,-ae (s.f.I) (Brassicaceae), “Shield-wort,” tribe Peltarieae [> pelta,-ae (s.f.I), q.v. although perhaps related to the name Peltarion,-ii (s.n.II), q.v.; From pelte, a small buckler (a round shield); in allusion to the form of the silicle. Brassicaceae (Paxton); “from the form of the leaf” (Stearn 1996).

Various epithets in ‘peltaria:’ Ateleia peltaria (Fabaceae); Heliophila peltaria (Brassicaceae); Pterocarpus peltaria (Fabaceae), and Selenocarpaea peltaria (Brassicaceae) all seem to be nouns in apposition, referring to the generic name Peltaria. There is no ‘peltarium’ in databases consulted; Pterocarpos peltarius St.-Lag. was accepted as P. peltaria DC.

NOTE: (zoology) Crabro peltarius: the “shield-handed square-headed wasps;” the males have greatly expanded front tibiae [Crabro,-onis (s. generally viewed as male, III).

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
