Phoenigmus,-i (s.m.II), abl.sg. phoenigmo = Gk. phoinigmos (s.m.II), “the irritation of the skin by rubefacient” (Liddell & Scott); rubified, i.e. made red “as when by application of mustard plastres, called Sinapismes; or beating a part that is benummed with nettles, it recovereth a fresh colour again, whereupon such plastres be called Rubificative, and the operation is named by the Greekes Phoenigmos” (Holland, 1634) [cf. Gk. phoinigma,-atos (s.n.II), that which is red]; cf. sinapismos,-i (s.m.II).

Rubefacient (Eng.noun): an agent or substance applied to the skin surface that reddens the skin and causes a localized sensation of warmth, sometimes used to relieve acute or chronic pain.
