A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Podium,-ii (s.n.II), abl. sg. podio: an elevated place, a height; a hill, hillock [> L. podium,-ii (s.n.II) = Gk. podion > pous,-podos, ‘foot’ + dim. –ion, ‘little foot,’ an elevated place, a height; in particular, a projection in a building, a jutting, balcony, podium; a projecting part in the circus or amphitheatre, a parapet or balcony next to the arena, where the emperor and other distinguished persons sat (Lewis & Short)]; cf. collis,-is (s.m.III), abl.sg. colle, a hill, high ground, (in pl.) uplands or highlands; see foothill; cf. upland; see hill;

Podium (Eng.noun): “a raised platform or pedestal: dais; a lectern; [in biology] ‘foot;’ specifically a tube foot of an echinoderm” (WIII).

NOTE: = Italian ‘poggio,’ hillock, knoll, hummock [> L. podium,-ii (s.n.II]);

- Villa del Poggio Imperiale (English: ‘Villa of the Imperial Hill’).

- in Ilicibus, tum in Regio viridario Boboli, tum in ampla semita villae Podii Imperialis perennat (Mich.), it lasts years on Ilexes, once in the Royal garden of Boboli, then again on the big path of the Imperial villa of Podium.

NOTE: the ‘big path’ may refer to a monumental tree-lined avenue at the Villa del Poggio Imperiale (English: Villa of the Imperial Hill), south of Florence.

- circa Podium ad Cajanum ad Cerros, quem etiam Londino Dominus Sherardus misit (Mich.), around the Podium [i.e. the heights] at Cajanum on oak [Quercus cerris], which also Lord Sherard sent from London.

- secus viam sub Ecclesia S. Мiniatis de Podio ditionis Vallis-Umbrosae (Mich.), along the road below the Church of Saint Miniatus de Podium [‘of the heights;’ Italian: poggio] in the [administrative district] of Vallis-Umbrosa [= Vallombrosa; Florence, Tuscany, Italy].
