A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Porta,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. porta: a gate, the gate of a city; the gate associated with an avenue, entrance, passage, outlet, door of any kind (syn.: fores, janus, ostium) (Lewis & Short); see pore; see portula,-ae (s.f.I);

- circa Рistorium extra portam Divi Магci (Mich.), around Pistorium beyond the gate of Saint Mark.

- in moeniis Romae Urbis, praesertim in interiori parte inter Portam S. Joannis, & S. Laurentii, reperitur etiam in externis Оstientibus moeniis ad Septemtrionem (Mich.), on the fortified walls of the City of Rome, chiefly in the interior part between the Gate of Saint John and Saint Lawrence, found also on the outer defensive walls of Ostiensis [Ostia] in the Northern part.

- Extra portam Divi Міniatis inter muscos tempore praedicto, & in moeniorum urbis nostrae rimis, ante horrea in loco dicto l’Uccello etiam erumpit (Mich.), beyond the gate of Saint Miniatus among mosses in the time already mentioned, and in the cracks in the (fortified) walls of our city [i.e. Florence], before the granary in the place called ‘l’Uccello’ it also sprouts out.

NOTE: [Saint Minias, also Minas and Miniatus, to whom the church of San Miniato al Monte is dedicated, Florence]

- Меnse Novembri, in Вoboli, per nemuscula circa Divae Brigidae portam (Mich.), in the November month, in Boboli, throughout the little grove around the gate of Saint Brigit.

- circa Рistorium extra portam Divi Магci (Mich.), around Pistorium beyond the gate of Saint Mark.

The The gates of Florence: a city gate is a gate which is, or was, set within a city wall. It is a type of fortified gateway in a walled city. 1.Porta alla Croce; 2. Porta a Pinti; 3. Porta Romana; 4. Porta San Frediano; 5. Porta San Giorgio; 6, Tower of San Niccolò.
