Saltus,-us (s.m.IV), acc.sg. saltum, abl.sg. saltu, nom. & acc. pl. saltus, gen.pl. saltuum, dat.& abl.pl. saltibus: : “a woody district, uncultivated but used for pasture,” forest pasture, woodland; wooded ravine or valey, dale, a narrow pass through a mountain; a forest or mountain pasture, cattle-run (Lewis & Short); “ravine-land;” the woodlands seem to be of a higher altitude than nemus,-oris (s.n.III), q.v.; often joined with sylva; cf. lucus,-i (s.m.II), nemus,-oris (s.n.III), sylva,-ae (s.f.I); see pasture; see woodland; ; often used of extensive tracts of dense, trackless old-growth highland forest wilderness, e.g. Saltus Hercynius, the Herynian Forest or ravine-land.

NOTE: “(historical units of measure) a saltus, a large unit of area (esp.) in relation to tracts of public land” (Wiktionary March 2019).

NOTE: it is often necessary to understand the context or the geography of the places referred to in the interpretation of this word.

- saltu angusto superatis montibus, in a narrow pass with the mountains rising above.

- ante saltum Thermophylarum in septentrionem versa Epirus, before the pass of Thermophylae in the north toward Epirus.

- saltibus degressi scrupulosis et inviis, descended with the passes rugged and impassible.

- in Castanearum, & Аbietum corticibus per Falterona Моntem, nec non in saltu Regiae Рratolini Villae ad Cerros (Mich.), on the barks of Castanea trees, and Firs throughout Falterone Mountain, also on [Quercus cerris] in the ravine-land of the Royal Villa [i.e. estate] of Pratolinus.

- Provenit in Еtruria, dumtaxat quantum nobis hactenus observare licuit, in nemorosis Falteronae jugis: in Pisciensi agro per saltum Coenobii Patrum Сарucinorum vulgariter dicti del Torricchio (Mich.), it occurs in Etruria, at least as much as can be observed by us up to now, in the glade-rich ridges of Falterona; in the Pisciensis region throughout the [forest pastures] of the Monastery of the Capucine Fathers commonly called ‘del Torricchio.’

Castulonensis Saltus: the Sierra de Cazorla, Andalucia in southern Spain.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
