A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Shop, store (Eng.nouns): a retail establishment, a place, building or part of a building where goods (merchandise) or services are sold; also a workshop where objects are manufacured, printed, etc.; a business establishment, office; cf. storeroom;

1. aedes,-is (s.f.III), q.v., abl. sg. aede; also aedis,-is (s.f.III): a room, building; [classically in the plural), a house, a dwelling place; “shop, printing establishment” (Maxwell 1998);

- in aedibus Aldi, et Andreeae soceri; [printed] in the shop of Aldo [Manuzio] and of his father-in-law Andrea [Torresani] (Maxwell 1998).

- “Impressum est & castigatum in aedibus Ascensianis = printed and proofread in the Ascensian shop” (Maxwell 1998).

2. apud (prep. + acc.), q.v.: at the house or residence of, with (a person); at the headquarters of, at the place of business, establishment or shop of (a tradesman, etc.);

- apud Paulum Manutium = at the shop of Paulo Manuzio (Maxwell 1998).

- Apud Viduam Claudii Thiboust, & Petrum Esclassan, at the establishment of the widow of Claudius Thiboust, and Peter Esclassan.

3. Caupona,-ae (s.f.I), q.v.: a retail shop [> L. caupo,-onis (s.m.III) a tradesman].

4. Officina,-ae (s.f.I), q.v.: “a workshop, manufactory; cf. fabrica; a shop (as of garments) whose merchandise is made for sale” (after Lewis & Short); in medieval Latin, used of a storeroom; a place where goods are sold, a shop.

5. Fabrica,-ae (s.f.I), q.v., “the workshop of an artisan who works in hard materials (syn.: taberna, officina)” (Lewis & Short); fabrica, “a shop (as of garments) whose merchandise is made for sale” (after Lewis & Short).

6. Taberna,-ae (s.f.I): shop, store; inn, tavern, saloon; hut, shed [[A taberna can be a shop where goods are sold. An officina is a shop where goods are manufactured. It is possible for a single shop to be both a taberna and an officina.
