A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Sporangium, Sporange (Eng.nouns) “spore-case;” q.v.; “whatever contains spores. (obsol.) sometimes applied to the volva among Fungals. Léveillé defines it to be among Fungals a globular or long cell containing spores” (Lindley); “”1. A sac endogenously producing sjpores; 2. (obsol) sometimes applied to the volva among Fungals’ (Lindley)” (Jackson);(in mosses) the spore sac of a capsule or, generally, the entire capsule; (bryophytes) “the capsule, the terminal spore-producing part of the sporophyte; in most liverworts and hornworts it is a uniform structure containing spores and elaters or pseudoelaters” (Magill 1990); (in fungi) a sporange, “an organ producing endogenous asexual spores (esp. of Myxomycetes and Phycomycetes)” (Ainsworth & Bisby); (in fungi) “a sac producing spores endogenously (Hedwig, 1787, 1784) (S&D): sporangium,-ii (s.n.II), dat.& abl.sg. sporangio, nom.& acc. pl. sporangia, dat. & abl.pl. sporangiis [> Gk. spora, a seed + angeion, a vessel or case]; see placenta; see capsule; see megasporangium, microsporangium; see synangium,-ii (s.n.II); cf. sorus; sporangium;

- [Diderma(a slime mold)] sporangiis gregariis, sessilibus, hemisphaericis vel paulo elongatis, chalybeis; hypothallo inconspicuo, with the sporangia gregarious, sessile, hemispheric or somewhat elongate, chalybeous [i.e. iron- or steel-gray]; with the hypothallus inconspiuous.

- [sporangia] Haec cl. Schleiden sporocarpia nominat. Huc pertinent sporangia Filicum, Ophioglossearum, Equisetacearum, quibus apud Phanerogamas loculi vel thecae antherarum analoga sunt; porro sporangia duplicis indolis Lycopodiacearum („antheridia et oophoridia" Spring), sporangia Muscorum et Hepaticarum, denique apothecia s. cymatia et perithecia Lichenum et Pyrenomycetum, nec non eorumdem pycnides (Tulasne) stylosporas continentes et peridia Gasteromycetum (Braun);

[sporangia] these the distinguished Schleiden calls sporocarpia. To this place pertains the sporangia of the Filices [i.e. ferns], Ophioglosseae, Equisetaceae, to which among the Phanerogamae the locules or thecae of the anthers are analogous; furthermore the sporangia of the Lycopodiaceae with a double quality (the “antheridia and oophoridia” of Spring), the sporangia of Musci and Hepaticae, and finally the apothecia or [s. = ‘vel’] cymatia and perithecia of Lichens and Pyrenomycetes, likewise the pycnidia of the same ones (of Tulasne) containing the stylospores and the peridia of Gasteromycetes.

NOTE: (moss) C. Mueller: the theca is the sporangium:

- Fructus: theca unilocularis (Sporangium) calyptra tecta. Sporangium e partibus tribus essentialibus compositum: Pars I centralis s. columella (plus minusve perfecta); pars II s. sporangidium, in quo semina nascuntur; pars III s. epidermis (C. Mueller), The fruit: a unilocular [i.e. with one cavity] theca (Sporangium) covered by a calyptra. Sporangium composed of three fundamental parts: Part I central [part] or [s. = seu] the columella (more or less perfect, that is, complete); part II or the sporangidium, in which the seeds [i.e. the spores] arise; part III or the epidermis.

Calpa,-ae (s.f.I): “(obsol.) the spore-case of certain Urn-mosses” (Lindley); “Necker’s term for the capsule of Fontinalis” (Jackson).

Calyculus,-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. calyculo,“(of Myxomycetes), a cup- or calyx-like structure at the base of the sporangium” (Ainsworth & Bisby).

Carcerule, q.v., “has been employed for the sporangia of some Fungi” (Jackson): carcerulus,-i (s.m.II).

Corpora carnosa (adj.A), ‘the sporangia of certain Fungi” (Jackson): corpora (nom.& acc. pl.), corporum (gen.pl): ‘bodies’ > corpus,-oris (s.n.III), q.v., body].

Corpuscle (Eng.noun); a (small) body; “(obsol.) the spore-cases [i.e. sporangium] of certain Fungals” (Lindley; Jackson); see ‘case.’

Gleba,-ae (s.f.I), q.v., spore or sporing mass; the spore-mass inside of a puffball; sporing tissue in an angiocarpous fruit body, in Gasteromycetes and Tuberales (Ainsworth & Bisby).

Gynosporangium,-ii (s.n.II), abl.sg. gynosporangio: gynosporangium; the receptacle in which gynospores are developed (7th ed. Fernald).

Peridium, q.v., (in fungi) “the wall or limiting membrane of a sporangium or other fruit-body” (Ainsworth & Bisby): peridium,-ii (s.n.II), abl. sg. peridio.

Resting sporangium: sporangium (s.n.II) perdurans (part.B), abl. sg. sporangio perdurante, nom. & acc. pl. sporangia perdurantia.

Sphaerula,-ae (s.f.I), q.v., spherule, “a sporangium-like structure in Coccidioides” (Ainsworth & Bisby).

Sporangium (pl sporangia): the container, case or spore sac producing spores in the moss capsule: the urn or theca; sometimes in mosses and liverworts refering to the entire capsule; see capsule.

Vesicula,-ae (s.f.I) sporophora (adj.A): “the spore-case of certain Fungals” (Lindley).

Zoosporangium, zoosporange, a sporangium producing zoospores: zoosporangium,-ii (s.n.II), abl.sg. zoosporangio.
