A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Tinea,-ae (s.f.II), abl.sg. tinea: a gnawing worm, wood or clothes moth, book- or worms of the human body such as ringworm, worms that infest trees; (fungi) “a general name for ringworm or other dermatomycoses in man or other animals” (S&D); see ‘ringworm’ under herpes (Eng.noun);

- tinea barbae capitis corporis cruris pedis ungulum, (ring)worm of the beard, head, body, groin, foot, nails (Stearn)

- terebramina furfuracea tinearum, the furfuraceous (branny) holes of (gnawing) worms.

- [dicit] “Odorem cordi familiarem ac gratum esse: in petrosis Suditorum superciliis nasci: reponi ad vestimenta, ut iis odorem conciliet & a tineis præservet" (Dill.), he reports the odor to be familiar to the spirit [i.e. heart] and pleasing: to arise on the rocky ridges of the Sudetes Mts., to be stored on clothing, so that it might unite with them the odor and preserve them from worms [i.e. clothes moths].

tinea barbae [L. barbae: ‘of the beard’: “a dermatomycosis of the bearded area of the face and neck caused by various species of Trichophyton and Microsporum; ‘barber’s itch’” (S&D).

tinea capitis [L. capitis: ‘of the head’] “a dermatomycosis of the scalp and hair, caused by species of Trichophyton and Microsporum” (S&D).

tinea corporis [L. corporis, of the body] “a dermatomycosis involving the glabrous skin and producing lesions varying from those of simple scaling to deep granuloma, caused by species of Trichophyton and Microsporum” (S&D)

tinea cruris [L. cruris ‘of the [forks of the] legs] “a dermatomycosis of the groin, perineum, and perianal region caused by Epidermophyton floccosum (Harz) Lang. & Miloch, and species of Trichophyton; ‘jockey itch, gym itch, jock-strap itch, etc.” (S&D).

tinea favosa [L. ‘honey-combed’] “a of the scalp and occ. the glabrous skin and nails, caused by Trichophyton Schoenleinii (Lebert) Lang. & Miloch., T. violacium Sab. and Microsporum gypseum (Bodin) Guiart & Grigor” (S&D).

tinia imbricata [L. ‘appressed and overlapping’] “a dermatomycosis in the South Pacific characterized by scattered, concentrically arranged rings of papulosquamous patches caused by Trichophyton concentricum Blanchard” (S&D).

tinea pedis [L. pedis: ‘of the foot’] “a dermatomycosis of the feet caused by Epidermophyton floccosum (Harz) Lang. & Miloch., various species of Trichophyton, and rarely, species of Microsporum; ‘athlete’s foot’” (S&D).

tinea tonsurans [L. clipping] “same as ‘tinea capitis;’ ringworm of the scalp.

tinea unguium [L. unguium (pl.) of the [toe or finger] nails] “a dermatomycosis involving the nails of the hands and feet, caused by Epidermophyton floccosum (Harz) Lang. & Miloch., various species of Trichophyton and Canadida albicans (Robin) Berkhout” (S&D).

tinea versicolor [L. variously or changing color] “a chronic disease characterized by desquamating macules pricipally on the trunk ... caused by Malassezia furfur (Robin) Baillon” (S&D).
