A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Tormina (pl.n.III), gen. pl. torminum, acc. pl. tormina, dat. & abl. pl. torminibus: a griping of the bowels, the gripes, causing a pinching and spasmodic pain in the bowels; colic.

Colic: (sudden and ephemeral) gastronintestinal or urinary pain;

-Urinae tormina, “pain in passing water” (Glare), i.e. pain of urin[ation].

- Si butyro frigatur herba, & abdomini imponatur, certum est contra tormina remedium. [Cam.] ad quod mulierculae ceu ad sacram anchoram confugiunt (Ray), if the herb may be fried in butter, and applied to the abdomen [i.e. the belly], it is a sure [i.e. reliable] cure against bowel pain [i.e. gripe, i.e. gastric or intestinal pain, colic] to which (common) women resort as if to a ‘sacred trust’ [i.e. ‘sacred anchor,’ i.e. hope].

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
