Variety, difference, diversity: varietas,-atis (s.f.III), abl. sg. varietate, nom & acc.pl. varietates, gen. pl. varietatum, dat.& abl. pl. varietatibus; "(Lat. difference), a sort or modification subordinate to species" (Jackson). Stace (1989) defined a variety as 'a population of one or several biotypes, forming more or less distinct local facies of a species.'

Variety (Eng.noun): a particular or different kind, type of sort of thing; the quality or state of having or including different kinds, forms or types, of being varied or diversified; a number or collection of different things; a differing state.

NOTE: also variatio,-onis (s.f.I):

- [Pediastrum ehrenbergii; algae] in variatione truncata cornicula commissuralia nonnunquam omnino deficiunt(Braun), in variation [i.e. variety] ‘truncata’ the commissural cornicula sometimes are completely lacking.

- Nullum discrimen video inter specimina duarum varietatum, sed has disjungo ob patrias diversas (DeCandolle), I see no distinction between specimens of the two species but I divide them due to their different birthplaces.

- An has quatuor stirpes ut unius speciei primitivae varietates habendae? (DeCandolle), should these four plants be taken as varieties of one primitive species?

Stirp (English noun): “a race. A permanent variety: as the Red Cabbage [Brassica oleracea var. capitata f. rubra]” (Lindley).
