A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Villus,-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. villo, nom. pl. villi, dat. & abl.pl. villis: long weak hairs; long, soft hairs; (collectively) villosity (villositas,-atis (s.f.III), abl. sg. villositate) “shagginess; a coating of long weak hairs” (Lindley); "a woolly or shaggy growth of hair; also to mossy or similar growth on trees” (Glare); opp. a fiber of strength: fibra,-ae (s.f.I), q.v.;

- Usnea vulgaris, loris longis implexis. “Stringy Tree-Moss.” Quos vero villos vocat J. Bauhinus, fila sunt satis, crassa, invicem implexa & involuta (Dill.), Usnea vulgaris, with the [straps] long, intertangled. “The stringy tree-moss.” Those things which J. Bauhin calls villi [i.e. long, weak hairs] are filaments, this way and that interlaced and intricate.

(in bryology) once used of paraphyllia; “long, weak hair; applied to some paraphyllia” (Magill 1990); see paraphyllium;

- [fungi] villus tegmineus delicatus digiti tactu vel levissimo illico abstersus pulverem ostendit (S&A), the delicate villus [i.e. villocity] a covering [i.e. serving as a cover, protection], when immediately broken up by the lightest touch with the finger, displays a powder [i.e. perhaps spores].

- villis in sinubus calycinis nullis distinguenda, to be distinguished by hairs none in the calyx sinuses.

- axibus inflorescentiae villis simplicibus unistratis praeditis, with the axes of the inflorescence provided with simple, unistratose villi.

- farina ista sphaerulas alias totas farctas, alias jam evacuatas villi ad instar coronatas deprehendimus (S&A), that [powder] we discover some whole sphaerules stuffed, others already empty, crowned in the form of a villus [i.e. a covering of long, weak hairs].

- [fungus] sphaerulae villo quodam brevi lanuginoso, sparsim in cirrhos flexuosos ligno molli interrepentes prolongato, obductae (S&A), the sphaerules covered with a certain short, wooly villus [i.e. shaggy growth], here and there when prolonged, creeping inside soft wood in flexuous cirri [i.e. a tendril-like structure]

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
