A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Wing, a membranaceous expansion or flat extension or appendage of an organ; also the lateral petals of a papillionaceous flower (corolla) as in Fabaceae and Polygalaceae: ala,-ae (s.f.I), q.v., abl. sg. ala, nom. pl. alae, acc. pl. alas, dat. & abl. pl. alis; pennae,-arum (pl.f.I), q.v., abl. pl. pennis; see standard petal, vexillum; cf. Gk. pteron (s.n.II), a feather, mostly in the plural, feathers; wings; a winged creature; the leafage of trees, like coma; see ‘samara,’ a winged fruit;

- pteropous, -podos, wing-footed; pteropoikilos,-on: motley-feathered, of pied plumage.

- seminum testa in alam expansa, the seed-coat of the seeds expanded into a wing.

Wings: “the two lateral petals of a papillionaceous flower. Any kind of membranous or thin expansion” (Lindley).

NOTE: in older literature may refer to the lamina of the (moss) leaf; see ala,-ae (s.f.I).
wing-, winged:

in L. comp. alato-, -alatus,-a,-um (adj.A);

- paucialatus, with few wings; multialatus, with many wings; quadrialatus, with four wings.

- alatocaulis, pterocaulis, winged stem; alatocarpus, pterocarpus, with winged fruits.

in Gk. comp., ptero-; -ptericus,-a,-um (adj.A), -pterus,-a,-um (adj.A)

- epiptericus (adj.A), epipterus (adj.A): epipterous, alate with a single terminal wing;

periptericus, peripterus, surrounded by a wing or border.

- oligopterus, with few wings; tetrapterus, with four wings; polyopterus, with many wings.

- pterocaulis, winged stem; pterocarpus, with winged fruits; pteropoikilos,-on: motley-feathered, of pied plumage; pterospermus, pterygospermus, with winged seeds

NOTE: bipennis (or bipinnis),-e (adj.B): having two wings, two-winged; also bipennis,-e (adj.B): “having two edges, two-edged” (Lewis & Short); see pennae,-arum (pl.f.I);

- insectum bipenne (adj.B), a two-winged insect.
wing, pertaining or relating to: alaris,-e (adj.B), q.v.
