A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Zealand (English name); Denmark, 'Sjaeland,' largest of the islands of Denmark: Selandia,-ae (s.f.I).
Zealand, New: Nova Zelandia,-ae (s.f.I); note that in a set of epithets, it appears that Nova Zealandia is also acceptable; adj. epithet novi-zelandicus,-a,-um (adj.A); novi-zelandensis,-e (adj.B);

- novae-zelandiae (of New Zealand (noun), gen.sg.).

- in Nova-Zelandia et Africa australi deest (B&H), it is absent in New Zealand and southern Africa

- Braya novae-zelandiae Hook. f.; Deschampsia novae-zelandiae Petrie; Echinopogon novae-zelandiae Gand.; Hierochloe novae-zelandiae Gand.; Poa novae-zelandiae Hack.; Sisymbrium novae-zelandiae Hook. f.

- Gnaphalium novae-zeelandiae Sch. Bip.

- Acaena novae-zealandiae [a misspelling for:] Acaena novae-zelandiae Kirk; Festuca novae-zealandiae (Hackel) Cockayne; Glyceria novae-zealandiae Petrie; Puccinellia novae-zealandiae (Petrie) Allan & Jansen

- Agariscostilbum nova-zelandica (auricularioid fungus); Agaricostilbum novozelandicum W. B. Kendr. & X.D. Gong [as ‘nova-zelandica’] [nom. inval., Art. 37.5], Mycotaxon 54: 21 (1995)]; Kumanasamuha nova-zelandica (a dematiaceous hyphomycete); Suaeda australis Moq. var. nova zelandica.

- Hellbom, P.J., 1896. lichenaea Neo-Zelandica seu Lichenes Novae Zelandiae a Sven berggren anno 1874-5 collecti etc. Bihang K. sv. Vet. Akad. Hand. 1.21, 111, 1-150; Hooker: Flora Novae-Zelandiae; Mueller, J. (1892a): Lichenes Knightiani, in Nova Zelandia lecti; Zahlbruckner, 1941, Lichenes Novae Zealandiae.

- Chiloscyphus Sect. Novarum-zeelandiarum J. J. Engel (Art.21.2, genitive plural noun for subgeneric epithets).

- nullae adhuc detectae in Africa et perpaucae in Australia et Nova-Zelandia (B&H), none as yet detected in Africa and very few in Australia and New Zealand. In 1642, New Zealand was discovered by Abel Tasman, a Dutch navigator and the name probably refers to the Dutch province of Zeeland, q.v.; New Zealand is now part of the British Commonwealth.

NOTE: the adj. novae-zelandicus (adj.A) has been altered here to novi-zelandicus,-a,-um (adj.A) and novi-zelandensis (adj.B) using -i as a connecting vowel.

NOTE: cf. Plagiothecium novae-seelandiae Brotherus, a moss from Australia and New Zealand.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
