In 1642, New Zealand was discovered by Abel Tasman, a Dutch navigator and the name probably refers to the Dutch province of Zeeland, q.v.; New Zealand is now part of the British Commonwealth.

NOTE: the adj. novae-zelandicus (adj.A) has been altered here to novi-zelandicus,-a,-um (adj.A) and novi-zelandensis (adj.B) using -i as a connecting vowel.
