A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

abaxial, dorsa (Eng.adjj.): abaxialis,-e (adj.B), away from the axis or center, the side of the leaf or other organ that faces away from the stem (usually the underside), the lower surface of the petiole, the outer surface of a tubular bract; in reference to the leaves, same as dorsal, q.v.; the upper surface or ‘back’ of a flattened plant body; opp. adaxial or ventral, q.v.; of a basidiospore, the side away from the long axis of the basidium (Ainsworth & Bisby); cf. anterior, q.v.;

- superficies (s.f.V) abaxialis, the abaxial (dorsal) surface;

- in pagina abaxial, on the abaxial or dorsal side (of a leaf).

NOTE. with respect to the definition of ‘dorsal,’ q.v., “this is reversed by some authors” (Jackson). See note under ‘adaxial.’
