A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Agar, agar-agar, “any of various colloidal extractives of certain red albae (as of the genera Gelidium, Gracilaria, and Eucheuma) ... used chiefly in culture media ... called also Chinese gelatin, Chinese isinglass, Japanese gelatin, Japanese isinglass” (WIII): 1. agar (s.m.II), gen. sing. agari, abl. sing. agaro (Stearn); 2. agarum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. agaro (Cash 1965); 3. (parm.) agar (s.n.III), in all cases and numbers is spelled the same as the nom. sg., i.e. it is an indeclinable neuter noun (Muldoon 1946); see medium (culture); see extract, malt, must, wort; see gel, gelatin; see ‘named;’ see concentrate; see extract.

Malt-agar: malto-agar (s.m.II), gen. sg. malto-agari; agar,-i (s.m.II), maltatus (adj.A);

Wort agar: mustum ex hordeo cum agaro, a wort from barley with agar; agarum (s.n.II) maltosum (adj.A), abl. sg. agaro maltoso.

- Bristol's agar: agar Bristolii.

- Czapek's agar: agar Czapekii [Czapek's solution agar "cf. Thom & Raper, Man. Aspergilli 32; 1945", in Stearn].

- Oatmeal agar: agar cremoris avenae (genitive singulars of cremor and avena); see oatmeal.

- agar ex infusione foeni, hay infusion agar ("cf. Thom & Raper, l.c. 35", in Stearn).

- Malto-agar, agar maltatus, malt agar.

Wort agar: mustum ex hordeo cum agaro, a wort from barley with agar; agarum (s.n.II) maltosum (adj.A), abl. sg. agaro maltoso.

NOTE: V-8: a brand name (registered trade mark) of a marketed vegetable juice (primarily tomato) used with agar; agar juris vegetabilis V-8 dicti; agar of a vegetable broth called V-8. Ingredients, in descending order of abundance: tomato juice, juices of carrots, celery, beets, parsley, lettuce, watercress, spinach, with salt, ascorbic acid, natural flavoring and citric acid.
