Agar, agar-agar, “any of various colloidal extractives of certain red albae (as of the genera Gelidium, Gracilaria, and Eucheuma) ... used chiefly in culture media ... called also Chinese gelatin, Chinese isinglass, Japanese gelatin, Japanese isinglass” (WIII): 1. agar (s.m.II), gen. sing. agari, abl. sing. agaro (Stearn); 2. agarum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. agaro (Cash 1965); 3.
